If you’re in your 40s, you’re likely seeing fine lines develop around your eyes. If you’re in your 50s, you may have developed vertical frown lines between your eyebrows. And if you’re in your 60s, those smile lines on the sides of your mouth may have developed into deep grooves, or your cheeks may have lost their fullness.

The good news? With today’s modern cosmetic treatments, you can reverse these visible effects of aging for a significant period of time and retain smoother, supple skin that can keep you looking as young as you feel. Many adults are choosing injectable cosmetic fillers instead of getting facelifts, which require surgery, stitches, and recovery time. Two of the most popular treatments, which are provided by KLM Eye MDs in the Brooklyn neighborhood of New York City, are Juvederm fillers and Botox.

What is Juvederm?

Juvederm is a patented solution that contains hyaluronic acid. Your body actually produces hyaluronic acid naturally. It’s what has kept your skin smooth and soft in your youth.

This special acid helps your skin retain moisture. When your skin is hydrated, it’s plump and has great elasticity. If you pinch yourself, the skin jumps right back into place. But as you age, the amount of hyaluronic acid in your skin diminishes, resulting in fine lines, wrinkles, and less elasticity, which leads to skin that sags and droops.

Juvederm also stimulates your skin to produce more collagen, the important protein in your skin that keeps it plump. Like hyaluronic acid, the amount of collagen your skin has declines with aging. Juvederm can revive your skin so it looks radiant and youthful again.

What happens during a Juvederm treatment?

Getting a Juvederm treatment is quick and easy. Juvederm comes in the form of a gel. Your medical provider cleans and marks the target areas for treatment and then injects the Juvederm in those areas. Your provider will gently massage the treated areas to make sure the filler spreads evenly. Depending on the number of areas you have treated, you’ll be done in 15-60 minutes.

What areas of my skin can Juvederm treat?

The Juvederm product line has several fillers that can treat specific areas of your face.

Cheeks

Juvéderm Voluma™ XC injectable gel adds fullness to your cheeks if they’ve begun to sag or appear hollow.

Smile lines

You’ve used the muscles around your mouth millions of times smiling and talking. Eventually, the gentle indentations may become facial folds or deep grooves. Juvéderm Vollure™ XC and Juvéderm XC injectable gels smooth out wrinkles and smile lines from your nose to the outside of your mouth.

Lips

Aging can also affect your lips. Your lips may tend to flatten out into a thinner line as you age. Juvéderm Ultra XC and Juvéderm Volbella™ XC injectable gels can plump up your lips so they’re full once again. Juvéderm Volbella XC can also improve the lines around the corners of your mouth.

How long do Juvederm fillers last?

It depends on the particular filler you receive. Juvéderm Voluma XC can last up to two years or more. Others can last anywhere from 6-12 months.

What is Botox?

Botox is not a filler. It’s an injectable that has a very small concentration of a bacteria called botulinum toxin type A in it.

Is Botox safe?

Botox is backed by almost two decades of clinical studies on its effectiveness and safety. It’s been approved for use in more than 95 countries. Almost 7 million Botox treatments were administered in 2015. A study published by the National Institutes of Health concludes that Botox “has an excellent track record for patient satisfaction.”

Botox should only be administered by a physician who has been trained in its use It’s used to treat medical disorders of the eye, but it can also be used for cosmetic purposes. That’s why the doctors at KLM Eye MDs are uniquely suited to administer Botox treatments.

What areas of the face does Botox treat?

Botox smooths out the lines extending from the outside edges of your eyes, commonly known as crow’s feet. In addition, it eliminates or reduces the appearance of frown lines, the vertical lines between your eyebrows.

How does Botox work?

When your medical provider injects Botox into specific muscles in your face, it blocks nerve endings that tell your muscles to move. When the muscles are still, your fine lines disappear or are significantly reduced. You’ll begin to notice the difference in your face within 48 hours. Results last 3-4 months.
